Our Story
I was born in Peru, a country rich in flavour, from its coffee to its cuisine, though coffee wasn't really part of my story back then.
Like a lot of Peruvians, I grew up surrounded by some of the world's best
coffee without ever paying it much attention.
That changed in Melbourne. Life had taken me across four countries before I found home in Australia, where I built my family and my career. And it was here, in a city that takes its coffee seriously, that I fell for it properly, cup by cup. I still remember the first one that stopped me in my tracks, a coffee so good it made me understand, finally, what all the fuss was about, and why a good cup is worth seeking out. The more I drank, the more I started to wonder about the coffee back home.
What I found filled me with pride. One day, at a small specialty roaster here in Australia, I saw my own country's name on the label, and it struck me how far that coffee had travelled to be poured with such care.
Peru grows some of the finest coffee in the world, high in the Andes, slowly
and with real care, and yet so much of the best of it leaves the country
unnoticed, undervalued and largely unknown. I had always been proud of where I came from and always longed to share more of it with Australia. This felt like something worth putting right.
That's how Sumaq began: my way of bringing the very best of my homeland to the country that welcomed me and giving a little back to both.
More than coffee, a cultural exchange
Sumaq means beautiful in Quechua, the first language of the Peruvian Andes. That's how we feel about Peruvian coffee, and about the country behind it. Sumaq is our way of sharing both.
We source premium Peruvian green beans and roast them fresh here in Australia. But the coffee is really just the beginning. It's an invitation to know Peru a little better: its warmth, its beauty, its people and its stories.
For hundreds of years, across countless cultures, sharing a coffee has been a way of sharing a moment. We want to bring that same spirit to our Aussie mates, because coffee was never meant to be a quick grab-and-go. It was meant to be shared.
Every Sumaq coffee comes with a little something extra: snippets of Peruvian art, stories and fun facts about Peru and its culture.
